How to Handle Slices and Add Topspin Like a Pro

Returning slices in pickleball can be a challenge, especially when your opponent adds heavy backspin. To counter it, you’ll need to focus on adding topspin, which reverses the backspin and keeps the ball from diving into the ground. Adjust your paddle angle to about 45 degrees, follow through with your body, and avoid simply slapping at the ball. Slices also tend to float longer, so take a step back and give yourself room to counter with topspin.

Players often struggle with slices because the natural reaction is to chop or punch the ball, which only adds to the backspin. Instead, focus on a smooth, low-to-high motion to generate topspin. By using your body to uncoil and follow through rather than just relying on your arm, you’ll find better consistency and control. Moving back slightly when you see a slice coming can help prevent you from getting jammed and give you space to return the ball effectively.

To further improve, practice drills that simulate slice-heavy shots. Machines like the Titan ball machine can be programmed to create slice scenarios, allowing you to train against heavy backspin. The key takeaway is to remain calm when faced with a slice, step back, and use topspin to take control of the rally. With time and practice, you’ll find yourself winning more points against those “dirty slicing players.”
