Governing the Game: UPA-A and USAP's Rivalry Heats Up

The pickleball world is witnessing a seismic shift as two major camps vie for supremacy. On one side, the newly announced United Pickleball Association of America (UPA-A) aims to become the sport's National Governing Body (NGB), a title currently held by USA Pickleball (USAP) since 1984. UPA-A’s launch on May 15, 2024, follows a series of strategic moves by UPA, which controls the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA) and Major League Pickleball (MLP). This declaration comes shortly after USAP partnered with the Association of Pickleball Players (APP) and UTR Sports, setting the stage for a showdown between these two powerful entities.

The competition extends beyond just organizational titles, as both camps offer competing services and platforms. USAP is aligned with APP and UTR Sports, while UPA collaborates with DUPR for ratings and Pickle Pro Labs (PPL) for paddle testing. Each side has its own pro tours, tournament management software, ratings systems, paddle standards, and rules. They also provide parallel programs for junior, college, and international pickleball. This fragmentation raises questions about the future of the sport, especially with the potential for divergent standards and rules that could confuse players and officials alike.

The core issue lies in the absence of Olympic recognition for pickleball, which would mandate an official NGB under the Ted Stevens Act. Until then, the rivalry between USAP and UPA-A will likely intensify, creating a competitive landscape that might benefit the sport through innovation and improved offerings. However, it also risks creating chaos and division. As both sides continue to develop their visions, the pickleball community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that unites rather than divides the sport.
