Breaking Barriers: How Pickleball is Uniting Charlotte's Black Community

A Charlotte-based pickleball organization is transforming how Black communities view this increasingly popular sport. Founded by Kayla Brooks in 2023, Black Pickleball & Co. aims to enhance socioeconomic mobility by involving Black professionals in pickleball, fostering networking opportunities and community engagement. Brooks' efforts have led to regular events at venues like Rally and Lab City in Charlotte, where a previously overlooked demographic is now finding a welcoming space to connect and play.

Black Pickleball & Co. stands out by prioritizing community over the sport itself, creating an inclusive environment where people of all backgrounds feel comfortable. Brooks, initially hesitant to join the pickleball scene, now leads initiatives to make it more inviting for Black individuals. The group’s partnership with Rally signifies progress, hosting monthly matches and special events like the Juneteenth celebration on June 19. Rally co-founders praise Brooks for building a strong community that motivates their mission to make the sport more accessible.

The organization’s success is evident, with over 500 attendees at its events since August. Unlike other pickleball groups that focus solely on the game, Black Pickleball & Co. emphasizes building connections and fostering a sense of belonging. Brooks envisions pickleball as a catalyst for friendships, business relationships, and personal enrichment. Her message is clear: everyone is welcome, regardless of their background or experience level, making Black Pickleball & Co. a unique and transformative force in the Charlotte sports scene.
