From No-Man's-Land to Pickleball Paradise: Brooklyn Bridge's New Courts

Twelve new pickleball courts are set to open under the Brooklyn Bridge, marking the first time in 15 years that this area will be accessible to the public. CityPickle, the company behind numerous New York pickleball courts, won the proposal to transform Anchorage Plaza into a vibrant recreational hub. In addition to the courts, the plan includes a dog run, food trucks, a tree nursery, art installations, beach chairs, restrooms, and more. The project, approved by the NYC Parks Department, is scheduled to start construction soon, with a targeted opening in spring 2025.

CityPickle plans to invest at least $2 million in the space, addressing drainage, leveling, and other necessary preparations. The transformation aims to turn the currently underused area—previously a parking lot and staging area for bridge work—into a dynamic recreational destination. This revitalization effort is expected to enhance the local community by providing much-needed recreational facilities and renewing cultural activities that the area once hosted.

Anchorage Plaza has a history of serving the community, having hosted an annual art show from 1983 through 2001. The new project under the Brooklyn Bridge aspires to revive this legacy, offering residents and visitors a place to enjoy sports, art, and various leisure activities. The addition of the pickleball courts and other amenities is anticipated to become a significant attraction, fostering community engagement and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
