Michigan Pickleballers’ Record Attempt Ends with Valuable Lessons
In Grand Rapids, Michigan, a group of determined pickleball players set out to break the Guinness World Record for the longest pickleball game, which currently stands at 34 hours and 5 minutes. Their inspiring endeavor raised money for Gift of Life Michigan, but it fell short when a miscalculation regarding break times invalidated their attempt after 14.5 hours of play. Despite this setback, the quartet—Brad Haverkamp, Julie Ondersma, Sydney Sonday, and Caleb Dang—showcased remarkable endurance and passion for both the sport and their cause.
The event took place at All In Pickleball Gym, starting at 8 a.m., and was marked by energetic support from witnesses and viewers via Livestream. Momentum was strong until the group realized they had inadvertently exceeded the allotted time for breaks. While they considered continuing and petitioning Guinness for leniency, they ultimately decided to end their attempt around 10:30 p.m. This tough call reflected their commitment to doing things by the book and their respect for the rules governing such achievements.
Although disappointed, the team views the experience as a learning opportunity. They plan to regroup and try again, armed with newfound insights into time management and the rigorous documentation required for Guinness verification. With lessons learned and spirits undaunted, Grand Rapids can expect an even more ambitious and prepared record-breaking attempt in the near future.
